DETAILS
FURTHER DETAILS
THE PROJECT: THE ECOLOGICAL HOSTEL The "Ecological Hostel" to be designed is meant to be a new worldwide prototype model of hostel housing, its main purpose being the enjoyment of the landscape and environment, not the level of comfort it brings. Within this scheme, the "Ecological Hostel" is more a place to be, rather than a place to be in: of enjoyment of the context before the enjoyment of the infrastructure. In this way the environment is freed of excessive contaminating residues produced by the heavy rotation of visitors. Higher value is placed on the temporary and active experiencing of the event itself (observation of the citadel) rather than on the efficiency and complexity that the installations may offer for a longer term stay. This "Ecological Hostel" is meant to be a next generation type of lodging, a self sufficient refuge whose service plan is based on contemporary parameters of "zero ecological impact" which will promote a new kind of habitability, such as self service or self generation of energy; of basic maintenance, with a minimal team of employees for cleaning and medical needs; and the virtual elimination of waste residue through communal hygienic facilities, classification of residue according to biodegradability, and use of clean energy sources. The goal of this shelter is to promote a new model of lodging in which tourists, with a minimum of luggage, can enjoy a clean, safe and economical place where they can spend a night and wake up around of the Citadel as well as enjoy, as part of their permanence- a trip inside the Maya's Cultures in special museum incorporated inside the own Hostel. The contest is trying to promote the development of a forward thinking consciousness in as far as lodging; tourism and ecological culture are concerned so the knowledge produced through it may be used at a later for the development of a project initiative. The "Ecological Hostel" will have a basic plan that will occupy a built area of 1,500 square meters (16,145 square feet). Within this plan the following spaces will be developed: PLAN AND USES HOSTEL • 20 double rooms: 173 square feet each one (16 square meters). These must be oriented towards the natural scenery, especially enhancing their relationship to the exterior. They must be able to include a double bed (of 6.5 feet x 6.5 feet) or two single beds and a small closet of 27.56 inches (70 cm) in depth, in which to place the luggage or backpacks of guests. The room may have a balcony or porch (recommended) so that contact with the scenery may be more direct. • Common bathrooms and toilets: 4 bathrooms of 270 square feet (25 square meters) each (2 for men and 2 for women). These will serve the 20 rooms and may be distributed on each level, intermediate levels or only one level (depending on the layout of the rooms in the proposal). Each common bathroom will have the following fixtures:  Men: 5 urinals, 4 toilets in booths, 5 sinks and 5 showers.  Women: 6 toilets y booths, 5 sinks and 5 showers. • Administration office: An area of 323 square feet (30 square meters) to place two desks and a reception counter. • Salon: An area of 1,077 square feet (100 square meters) in which to place 5 living room pieces (one three seat couch, a two seat couch and a one seat couch with a dividing low table). • Dining room: An area of 1,600 square feet (150 square meters) in which to place 8 communal tables (two benches with a table in the middle, serves 8 people minimum). • Kitchen: an area of 650 square feet (60 square meters) in which to place a double door refrigerator, an industrial grill and oven, and a central table for the preparation of food. • Employee rooms: 2 rooms of 100 square feet (10 square meters) each (one for men and one for women) which include a bunk bed and a dresser, with a full bathroom with independent entry (included area). • Laundry: an area of 270 square feet (25 square meters) in which will be placed a washing machine and a dryer, plus an area for ironing. There may be an area used for air drying clothes, but it should not be bigger than 15 square meters. • Nurse's room: an area of 160 square feet (15 square meters) in which to place a bed, and cabinet for instruments and other clinical items to treat first aid matters. • Terraces: using a total maximum built area of 2,150 square feet (200 square meters), these will be located according to the architect's design and may be roofed or not. Additionally there may be exterior and private terraces for each room. • Lookout terrace: an area no bigger than 215 square feet (20 square meters) that will rise above the complex. It will be a vantage point in which a small living area may be placed and in which activities of observation, contemplation, reading, etc. may be done. • Storage: 3 areas of no more than 45 square feet (4 square meters) each. MUSEUM • Entry Hallway: An area of 140 square feet (13 square meters) that will connect the Museum with the Hostel • Permanent Exhibit Hall: An area of 540 square feet (50 square meters) was will be exhibit the models of the Tikal and the Maya Culture. • Temporary Exhibit Hall 1: An area of 270 square feet (25 square meters) was will be exhibit the site ceramics. • Temporary Exhibit Hall 2: An area of 270 square feet (25 square meters) was will be exhibit the site mummies and the textiles. • General storage: An area of 270 square feet (25 square meters) • Maintenance storage: 2 storage of 54 square feet (each one) in which all tools, utensils and all elements necessary to mount an exhibit will be stored. SUMMARY HOSTEL 20 double rooms: 3,444.45 square feet Common bathrooms and toilets: 1000 square feet Administration office: 323 square feet Salon: 1,076.39 square feet Cafeteria/Dining room: 1,614.59 square feet Kitchen: 645.83 square feet Employee rooms: 215.28 square feet Laundry: 270 square feet Nurse's room: 161.46 square feet Terraces: 2,152.78 square feet Lookout terrace: 215 square feet Storage: 129.17 square feet PARCIAL HOSTEL: 11,250 square feet MUSEUM Entry Hallway: 140 square feet Permanent Exhibit Hall: 540 square feet Temporary Exhibit Hall 1: 270 square feet Temporary Exhibit Hall 2: 270 square feet General storage: 270 square feet Maintenance storage: 108 square feet PARCIAL MUSEUM: 1,600 square feet Paths and walls: Maximum of 25% of total area built: 3,212.50 square feet TOTAL AREA OF ECOLOGICAL HOSTEL: 16,000 SQUARE FEET (1,500 square meters) NOTE: Up to 15% over the total built area of the museum will be tolerated. BASIC ORGANIZATION • In order to get into the Museum -from the Hostel- it should be necessarily to pass trough de Entry Hallway. • The Entry Hallway will have an independent access so the tourist that would like to visit the Fortress may be allowed to go through this space without necessarily getting into the Hostel. • The Museum and Hostel paths will be clearly differenced, with the possibility of being integrated trough a glass or "virtual" element that allows them to be "spatially united" but not necessarily physically. NOTE: In addition there must be a service entrance for the administrative and maintenance personnel that can be used, eventually, as an escape exit. The Museum must be arranged in such a way that upon visiting the last Hall the visitor then arrives at the Entry Hallway (through a corridor, ramp or stairway) without having to necessarily pass through all of the Exhibition Halls again. DESIGN PARAMETERS • Location: The Ecological Hostel may be located anywhere nearby the archeological site. Therefore, every participant is free to select the area that considers more convenient for his proposal. • High and levels: There will be no height restrictions. • Views: The Citadel should be view from the cafeteria. Depending on each proposal, the rooms' main view may be towards the Citadel or the landscape. • Vertical circulation: The use of at least one access staircase and an elevator must be considered (this area is not considered in the area table shown before). • Program: The organization will depend of every proposal as long as the previously described "Basic Organizational Chart" is adhered to. • Natural and Artificial lighting: The Exhibition Rooms should have indirect natural light, while the cafeteria should have direct natural light. The other rooms may do without natural light and rely on artificial light. SPECIAL CONDITIONS • Criteria of Conservation and Environment: Standard environmental stipulations will be considered. In other words, the basic idea is to avoid a large environmental impact in the area. The natural beauty of the rainforest landscape and the enjoyment of the Citadel's architecture constitute the basic starting premises, not only their preservation but also as central reference points for the project: architecture must be created from the particular atmosphere of the place, the intense dialogue with the impressive landscape and with the static and homogeneous weather. • Materials: It is recommended, preferably, the selection of materials appropriate to the context, the weather and the image of a Hostel with a privileged location in the rainforest. • Structure: Although the structure must have an architectural solution, it's not necessary to solve the parts' details, or the technical analysis. • Rains: Rainfall must be controlled not necessarily through the employment of slanted coverings but it must have some basic drainage system that leads the rainwater away from the building. • Water and Electricity: An alternative source of clean energy (such as solar panels) or gas run energy sources may be proposed, in order to minimize the maintenance costs and to avoid pollution and toxic wastes. Nevertheless, it is not an obligatory requirement to propose such solutions since this is a project draft and it can be subjected to technical adjustments at a later date should it become a reality in the future. • Ventilation: A forced ventilation system or an alternative system (ecological) may be employed, or a system of solar cells that would mean the minimum use of electrical energy possible for air conditioning. However, this is not an obligatory requirement in this initial planning phase of the project, given that such a system can be developed at a later stage during the eventual building of the project. EXCEPTIONS ARQUITECTUM considers that "Academic" Contests are an excellent field for experimentation, discussion and architectural speculation. In this sense our parameters are always fairly open, flexible and, in a way, referential. Given that our interest is to motivate architects to give their "point of view", often said vision may involve the very subversion of the rules defined by the contest. In other words, each architect is free to explore how far they can overlook -or even break- the rules, of course risking disqualification in the attempt. THE SITE The project must be located nearby the archeological site of TIKAL (see "Photos" and "Plans" on the ZIP file that you can "download" of our webpage). Country: Guatemala Location: Petén Region Latitude: 17° 13’ 20" North Longitude: 89° 37’ 25" West Altitude: 230 meters above the sea level Minimum temperature (night): 15° to 22° C (59° a 72° F) Maximum temperature (day): 28° to 35° C (82° to 95° F) Humidity: 81% Average Annual Precipitation: 1281 mm Winds: 4km/h (calm) Visibility: 10 Km AWARDS These are the awards: 1st PRIZE • US$ 3,000 (THREE THOUSAND AMERICAN DOLLARS). • An appearance on the German design magazine "Wettbewerbe Aktuell" (www.wettbewerbe-aktuell.de) on the TIKAL 2011 Contest, and particularly of the winning projects. • An appearance on the edition of Latin American architecture magazine "ARQ•: procesos". • An appearance on the edition of Spanish magazine of architectural "FUTURE (www.arqfuture.com)". 2nd PRIZE • US$ 1,000 (ONE THOUSAND AMERICAN DOLLARS). 3rd PRIZE • US$ 500 (FIVE HUNDRED AMERICAN DOLLARS). 9 HONORABLE MENTIONS SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS The proposals submission consists of one single part, one (01) digital image that can be easily viewed within the horizontal format of a computer screen. The presentation technique is absolutely open and at the discretion of the project designer. However, the inclusion within the image of the following information is recommended: • Main concept of the project, • Plans, • Sections, • Sketches or Perspectives The presentation should clearly document the proposal as well as the approach to the project. Ideas regarding organization, materials, treatment of the location as well as the design should be included when considered relevant. In some part of the image there should be included the area of each floor, as well as the total area of the project. Any other verbal (or numerical) description should be expressed in English only and should be incorporated into the graphic presentation of the project. The Official Registration Number should appear on the upper right side of the image.
